Kerf & Keep

Rectangular sheet planning

Plan the job. Keep the useful pieces.

Turn a rectangular parts list and the sheets you have into a checked cutting plan, a workshop packet and a record of the offcuts you keep for the next job.

Apple editions are being prepared. Native editions for iPhone, iPad and Mac are in preparation. Release details and download links will be added here when available.

From a parts list to the next job

Keep the plan and the stock record together.

Plan from finite stock

Enter the actual quantities and dimensions of full sheets and rectangular offcuts. Keep material and thickness separate, so a similar-sized piece is not silently substituted.

Make the constraints explicit

Work in millimetres or inches, including supported fractions. Set grain, permitted rotation, saw kerf and edge trim, then review the checked layout and any unplaced parts.

Prepare workshop records

Create PDF job packets and placed-part labels for A4 or US Letter. Keep part dimensions, source stock and the proposed cut sequence with the job.

Choose what becomes stock

Select useful rectangular remnants and explicitly record the plan's stock consumption. Planning or exporting alone does not change available quantities.

Give kept pieces an identity

Committed remnants receive stock IDs linked to their source records. Prepare labels, match them to the physical pieces and select available stock for a later plan.

Keep portable backups

Export an editable workspace containing the project, stock history and archived checkpoints. Opening a backup creates a local working copy; Save and autosave leave the selected file unchanged. Export again for a current portable backup.

A deliberate workshop workflow

  1. List and review

Enter parts and available stock, create a plan and inspect every unplaced instance.

  2. Prepare the job

Keep a readable packet with the work. Review which source pieces the plan represents.

  3. Record and reuse

Commit the stock change when appropriate, label the kept pieces and carry their actual stock IDs into the next job.

Follow the getting-started guide for the exact controls and the difference between a proposed remnant and available stock.

Know what the plan establishes

Kerf & Keep works with rectangular sheet parts and rectangular stock. Its search produces a best-found layout; it does not guarantee the least waste or a globally optimal result. A valid partial plan still leaves work unplaced.

The app records the dimensions and stock information you supply. Review the physical material before use. A diagram or stock label does not inspect a piece, detect a cut or provide machine-operation instructions.
