Kerf & Keep

Support

Help with your project.

Find answers about saving work, reading a plan and keeping a clear remnant record.

Kerf & Keep is being prepared for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Availability, price, included editions and purchase scope will be stated on its published App Store page.

Saving or reopening went wrong?

  1. Preserve the current workspace. If your work is still open, keep it open and pause further stock changes while the save state is uncertain.
  2. Keep a separate copy. Use Back up workspace if available and save a new file. Preserve your existing backups.
  3. Follow the offered recovery action. Use Recover previous local save… or Open a verified backup… when offered. Check the recovered quantities against your physical stock before another commitment.

A previous record may predate real cuts or stock changes. Use the offered recovery control for an internal local save; file import accepts portable backups outside the app’s managed storage. After successful recovery, check physical stock and export a new portable backup before continuing.

Common questions

Which file should I keep as a backup?

Use Back up workspace to keep an editable .kerfkeep workspace outside the app. It preserves the project, stock history, archived checkpoints and unfinished drafts.

CSV exchanges rows. PDF keeps a job packet or labels. Neither replaces the full workspace backup. Save on this device is working storage, so keep a separate portable backup too.

Will Save change a document I opened?

No. Supported native workspace and older portable files open as a local working copy; the selected source file is unchanged. Save on this device and autosave update local app storage. Use Back up workspace to explicitly export a new portable copy.

Back up before opening another workspace: it replaces the active workspace rather than merging stock. Earlier full workspace copies are retained locally. An existing or older stock copy may open at a new checkpoint with its old history preserved read-only. That checkpoint clears the active plan and input drafts; the selected backup remains unchanged. Check quantities against physical stock before recording more work.

Background saving depends on the time the system allows. If saving becomes uncertain, preserve the open work and follow the recovery notice before changing more stock.

Does my stock library sync between devices?

The app does not operate a shared cloud stock library or cross-device stock lock. A file provider may synchronize a backup you explicitly export under its own settings; the app does not write your local edits back to an imported file. Work from one current stock record, keep backups and reconcile actual quantities before switching to another copy.

Does starting a new project remove earlier copies?

No. Local records can include the active workspace and unfinished drafts, a previous recovery save, preserved unreadable saves, archived history and earlier full-library snapshots. Exported or provider-synchronized copies remain at their chosen destinations.

Starting a new project, opening another workspace or deleting one exported backup does not remove every retained copy. This version has no single action that deletes all of them.

What does a partial plan mean?

Some required parts are still unplaced, so the job is incomplete. Read their reasons and check units, material, grain, allowances and available stock. A high area percentage does not mean every part fits. After changing inputs or stock, create a fresh plan.

The planner seeks a best-found rectangular guillotine layout. It does not promise a mathematical optimum or guaranteed material savings.

Why is a proposed remnant missing from stock labels?

A proposed rectangle has a plan-node ID. It becomes a stock record with an inventory stock ID only after you choose to keep it and explicitly commit the plan. Committed-remnant labels use currently available stock with matching committed history; manually entered or exhausted rows are not automatically eligible.

Planning, exporting and reprinting labels do not change stock. Match a label’s stock ID, dimensions, material, thickness and grain to the physical piece before reuse.

Can I undo a stock change after archiving history?

Use Review latest stock undo… to inspect the latest applied action. Later dependent actions must be reversed first. Undo restores a software record; it cannot reverse physical cutting.

Review archive & carry forward… keeps the closed history and carries the exact remaining stock forward. Undo stops at that checkpoint. Back up first, create a fresh plan afterward and keep a new backup. Archived quantities are not additional stock.

How do I get back to my own stock after an example?

Open the workspace backup you saved before loading the example. To start a separate empty record, use Remnant library → Start a separate empty library… and review the confirmation. Back up first if you need an independent copy.

New project keeps the current library, including any sample stock. Example dimensions are illustrative; check your real material before recording a job.

How should I prepare a PDF or labels for printing?

Choose A4 or US Letter in Export, prepare the PDF and review its preview. Diagrams are scaled: use the written dimensions. Labels are intended for plain paper and are not calibrated to a particular adhesive sheet.

Printer and sharing options depend on your device and available destinations. A geometric cut sequence does not provide machine setup or equipment-operation instructions.

Where do I ask about an App Store purchase or refund?

If you purchase through Apple’s App Store, use the applicable Apple purchase or refund route and terms. Check the published listing for the price, included platform editions and purchase scope.
