Before planning · worked example
Check the list before you trust the layout.
The plan uses the parts and stock you supply. A short check of units, counts and material constraints can catch an input mistake before it becomes a convincing-looking diagram.
Apple editions are being prepared. This guide describes the native iPhone, iPad and Mac workflow. Its sample is an original synthetic parts list, not a cabinet assembly design or a measured customer result.
Four rows, seven required pieces
Choose Back up workspace before practicing. Use Workspace actions → Load worked example → Plywood cabinet parts, then confirm Open example as separate library. The sample replaces the active project, layout and raw drafts with a separate practice record.
| Part | Width | Height | Quantity needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side panel | 720 | 560 | 2 |
| Top / bottom panel | 564 | 560 | 2 |
| Shelf panel | 564 | 520 | 1 |
| Narrow rail | 564 | 100 | 2 |
All seven pieces use material name plywood-18, thickness 18 mm, grain along width and no rotation. Available stock is one 2440 × 1220 mm sheet with the same material, thickness and grain. The settings are 3.2 mm kerf, 10 mm trim on every edge and a 100 × 100 mm useful-remnant minimum.
Make these checks in Parts & stock
Confirm units before editing dimensions
Choose Edit parts & stock and check Display units. Read width and height with those units. An explicit
mmorinsuffix can override the display-unit choice for an entry. For inch practice, the separate Inch and fraction workshop uses values such as 20 1/2 × 10 3/4 in. Use a space in a mixed fraction. Changing display units preserves physical size; it is not a way to convert an 18 mm board into 3/4 in stock.
Count pieces as well as rows
The cabinet sample has four part rows but seven required instances: 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 7. Check each Quantity needed against your list.
Stock has a different count: Available quantity is one sheet here. Zero means exhausted stock. Do not duplicate a stock row to represent the same physical sheet twice; a duplicate row has separately counted availability.
Match material and thickness together
Check Material name and Thickness on every required part and source piece. Names are exact and case-sensitive. Choose Use an existing material group on a part or stock card to copy both values together.
The sample uses
plywood-18and 18 mm everywhere. In a real mixed list, a larger piece of MDF or a different plywood thickness is not an interchangeable substitute.Check the grain axis and allowed rotation
Width is the horizontal x direction; height is the vertical y direction. Review each part's Required grain and each source piece's Stock grain. The options include Along width (x) and Along height (y).
The cabinet sample locks rotation and follows width. A permitted 90° turn must still satisfy the declared grain. A fit that requires an impermissible turn is not a valid placement.
Keep kerf and edge trim distinct
Kerf per internal cut reserves material between the two sides of an interior cut. Edge trim removes the specified outer margin. Check the intended allowance rather than treating both as the same value.
Here, the 10 mm trims leave a usable rectangle of 2420 × 1200 mm. The separate 3.2 mm kerf still matters inside that rectangle. These sample values are illustrative; enter the requirements for your actual material and process.
Set a useful-remnant threshold
The cabinet sample's Useful remnant minimum is 100 × 100 mm. Both current-axis dimensions must meet their configured minimum. A narrow strip does not qualify merely because its area is large.
This setting decides which proposed rectangles are eligible to keep. It does not turn every leftover into library stock or promise that any qualifying remnant will remain.
Use the current library record
If these pieces already belong to a stock library, select their current available IDs through Remnant library → Use selected stock for next plan…. Do not silently alter an old planning snapshot to change what is on the shelf.
A library correction requires a recorded adjustment. A new job should use current available stock and a fresh plan.
Use an area check as a warning, not a fit test
The seven sample parts total 1,844,160 mm². The trimmed usable sheet has 2,904,000 mm² of area.
Required part area is smaller than usable sheet area.
That fact alone does not prove the parts fit. Their shapes, grain, permitted turns, cut structure and kerf still constrain the arrangement. These are hand-calculated input totals, not measured yield from an app run.
Then create and review the plan
Repair highlighted measurements, then choose Create cutting plan. Review the placed count, every unplaced instance and all represented source sheets. A best-found layout is not a guarantee of global optimality, and an unplaced result alone does not prove that no arrangement exists.
Planning and PDF export leave stock quantities unchanged. Only an explicit stock commitment records consumption and selected kept remnants. Save an editable backup as well as any PDF; a report is not a workspace backup.
Continue with the offcut walkthrough: keep, label and reuse actual stock IDs.
Use a companion CSV without losing the settings
A starter pack contains the cabinet example's four parts rows and one stock row, plus the inch and mixed-material examples. Its measurement entries include units. CSV carries rows only, so you must still enter the kerf, trim, remnant minimum and other project settings shown in this article.
Practice with the synthetic starter pack. Read the practice-file guide or download the starter-pack ZIP. You can load Plywood cabinet parts from the bundled examples in the meantime.
When practicing with CSV, export your work first and start a separate empty library. Use Workspace actions → CSV row exchange…, choose the Parts or Stock rows, open the matching CSV, then Preview and validate before applying. Read issues before replacing rows. Appending the same list does not merge duplicate physical stock.
The companion PDFs are separate historical synthetic examples. They are not solved outputs of these CSVs or proof of the outcome from your own inputs.
